Is Roger Waters a good man? I do not know. But he surely strikes me as an adequate man. And one of the very few today who are not just capable but also willing to see the truth. On the other hand, given the current state of affairs in the world in economic, political and social terms, which as far as any sentient being is concerned can only be regarded as critical, the voice of eminent ones becomes particularly important. While raising their voice for those in such a position becomes both a duty and responsibility.

That’s why I’d like to hope that Roger’s apologias for Obama - specifically those delivered in the course of his conversation with Eric Ripert - were a result of some peculiar brain effect induced by probably not so fresh langoustines. Which is not to say that his assessment of the Republican candidate was in any way incorrect. But Roger’s fascination with the exact mirror image of Romney and yet another corporate fascism agenda promoter and hand-picked puppet for this bipartisan complicity and plutocratic duopoly circus Obama is a piece of mystery. And I should say that it would certainly be great if people like Roger, that is ones whose opinions might have some effect on those of quite a number of other people, could take it a bit more seriously - especially in respect of such important issues and on such pivotal occasions.

This forum is hardly a proper place to go into economic specifics. Besides it would not simply make much sense because the picture seems to be crystal clear. It’s quite evident for anybody who is ready to choose the red pill (that is the truth, however harsh it might be, but also sanity and ultimately hope) instead of the blue one (comfortable illusions but ultimately a catastrophe) that both the Democons and Republicrats pursue economic policies that are economic weapons of mass destruction leading the country and the whole world into a disaster. The same goes to their foreign policies. As Ron Paul, the only prominent American politician who could have made real difference, justly stated in one of his 32 questions being part of his farewell speech to Congress: “Why does changing the party in power never change policy? Could it be that the views of both parties are essentially the same?”

So I will just take the liberty of refreshing the memory of those pathologically myopic people who are inclined to present Obomber as some kind of true alternative to Robmney, Democrips to Rebloodicans, and thus seem to be sleepwalking into an abyss in respect of these two facts:

Bush: The Patriot Act / indefinite detention for enemy combatants.

Obama: Reauthorizing the Patriot Act (while the promise to “revisit” it was part of his first term presidential campaign) / supplemented by - indefinite detention for American citizens (the National Defence Authorization Act) / and the ultimate touch - the self-assumed ‘right’ to execute citizens of any country as well as American people only suspected of terrorist activity without arrest or trial (in plain English - to kill anybody at his sole discretion).

So Obama did not reverse the overt assault on the Constitution, which Roger seems to consider so scary a thing, started by the Bush administration, in the least. On the contrary, he evidently brought the process to the next level. If one places those two documents mentioned alongside Orwell’s “1984” it will be hard to detect any difference as to the approaches implemented. So much for the most liberal president. So much for the main world democracy. And here is another entry from that list of Congressman Paul’s questions: “Why is there so little concern for the Executive Order that gives the President authority to establish a “kill list”, including American citizens, of those targeted for assassination?”

That's a good question. Indeed, as Arthur Silber puts it: "It’s not every day that the president claims the right to dispense death arbitrarily. It’s not every day that the State announces that its central mission is the elimination of human life, wherever, whenever and to whatever extent it wishes." But Ron Paul has always been way too diplomatic. So let's give Mr. Silber a chance to continue in his more direct way: “It is a fact that Obama and Romney both claim the President possesses absolute power, the power over life itself - and this with regard to every human being alive. It is a fact that a vote for Obama or Romney means that you support their claim. Say that, and those who refuse to surrender their souls will know where you stand.”

“If you vote for Obama or Romney - it is certainly your right. Although you will forever forfeit the right to speak of "rights" at all. Because if a human being can be murdered for any reason, or for no reason at all, merely on the arbitrary order of someone who claims the power to issue such orders, she has no rights at all. You thus sanction the destruction of all rights, yours included. If you support this particular evil, that is murdering by arbitrary edict anyone, anywhere, anytime - and if you vote for Obama or Romney you support it - then you will support anything. Because there is no evil beyond that. So anyone who says they vote for Obama or Romney should declare: "I vote proudly. I am proud to be a knowing accomplice to their murders, including the murders of innocents."

I do not think that I can really add anything here. I do not fancy this modest post to become a trigger for Roger to terminate his hopefully occasional departure from good sense which he normally seems to manifest either. But I do hope that something will become such a trigger and soon enough. Because “What do you get for pretending the danger's not real / Meek and obedient you follow the leader / Down well trodden corridors into the valley of steel” never rang so true and frightening as it does today. This voice is needed if we do not want to transfer ourselves from “Fahrenheit 451” we are living now right into “1984”.

And in the wake of another act of the obscene farce that came to its conclusion on November 6 here is a brief piece of political satire, which was in part inspired by one of “South Park” brilliant episodes, Jesse Ventura’s recent remarks, and Pink Floyd‘s classic lines, but mostly by that pantomime’s sheer depravity.

Welcome To The Circus

Hey, folks everywhere,
Do you see flashing spotlights?
Bread and circuses are all you need,
Is that right? Forget all your reason,
Join the show’s new season. Don’t dawdle -
It will be sold-out tonight

The house is all gaudy
Tightly packed with the herd
Docile, if not happy, not giving the bird
But pensively choosing between
The two options - between
A giant douche and a sandwich with turd

The lights here are brightest
But it’s hard to distinguish
Those two little puppets jerking on stage
Both lie as they breathe in the deadliest contest
To seize for a fortnight
The lead role in a cage

Their attires fit them nicely
The crowd gets dizzy
No one seems to regard the question of springs
But for both the clowns NASCAR suits
Would be better - so that it could be seen
Who are pulling the strings

I'm an Israeli, and a proud one, let me add. I'm proud not because I'm "brain washed". On the contrary. We Israelis ask ourselves, every day, all the hard quastions, and try to answer them with integrity. We ask why, we ask what is our true responsibility to the situation, and how can we solve it. Obviously, you don't. Why should you? your life is not in stake here, so why bother. Just put on your machine gun and start shooting - at us...
I think that if you were a real humanist, you would start asking yourself quastions as well, and learning more deeply about what is really going on in the middle east. Then, maybe you could reach a more genuine understandig of what is going on here.
How I wish, how I wish you were here...

Let me add that I'm a real fan of Pink Floyd. So sad to find out that a great musician can be so small in political matters. But then, nothing is new under the sun....

Thu, 31 Jan 2013 19:50:14 -0600 slugbelch 1393@/forum/index.php?p=/discussions First of all I should say that I am English, have always lived here, and am reasonably proud to be so. I first saw the Floyd in '74 when I was 12, at the Empire Pool Wembley (15th November). Even at this age I had already seen a few bands (Humble Pie, Uriah Heep etc.) we were spoilt for choice in London back then. Anyway, I almost immediately became totally obsessed with them, both music and lyrics, and I have no doubt that I was influenced by Roger Waters view of life in England ('hanging on in quiet desperation' etc.) and life in general.
Unlike Roger I grew up in a pretty poor East London family although (like him & Syd Barrett) both me and my brother managed to 'qualify' for Grammar school here. Anyway, what became apparent to me very early on was the completely unfair way in which the quality of education avalaible to each individual was controlled almost completely by the class system here in England. Added to this the opportunities available to non fee paying school leavers (like us) and fee paying school leavers were poles apart. You only have to look at anyone in a high powered job here like politicians, BBC broadcasters and most other journalists, actors, top civil servants, top army ranks etc. and it becomes totally clear that at least 80 percent of these people are from over privileged backgrounds. For me, and I'm certain millions of other English people it is a totally sickening situation where money and old empire building well connected families are having such a wonderful time (as did their predecessors) while the vast percentage of the working class here struggle...........
Which (from an English point of view) leads me to the best couplet ever written by an Englishman (and for my money anyone else for that matter)

'Forward he cried from the rear, and the front rank died'......... It just says it all...........

So simple and so perfect......

However, at the risk of being contentious here, I know for certain that Roger Waters politically was much more left wing than the other members and so to this end, in my old age, I would like to know if he, like some other well known millionaires (eg. Paul McCartney) stood by his principles and sent his own children to non fee paying schools?.......I really hope so, in view of the lyrics he has written over the years...... The 'if you can't beat them join them' reasoning here just continues to shit on those less lucky through birth or background or whatever...

Politicians here are famous for this con of telling the public that state funded schools are good enough and yet sending their own to fee paying schools which provide an unfair advantage over the 'front rank' in real life........

Lastly, my apologies to readers from other countries who may not understand the Royal/Political/Class system here which I'm referring to..

Thanks for reading

Letter Regarding Cultural Boycott of Israel http://rogerwaters.com/forum/index.php?p=/discussion/1447/letter-regarding-cultural-boycott-of-israel Sun, 21 Apr 2013 01:06:46 -0500 agoldstein 1447@/forum/index.php?p=/discussions Roger Waters, in his newest post, discusses his desire to include fellow musicians in a cultural boycott of Israel. Here is Waters' rough draft of a letter to musicians: "To My Fellow Musicians: Please join me in a Cultural Boycott of Israel until such time as the Israeli Government ceases its illegal occupation of Palestinian lands and reverses its Illegal program of settlement building, both of which, it is widely agreed, constitute insurmountable impediments to any peaceful solution for either The Palestinian or The Israeli People. Peace for them both is our goal."

Let us analyze what Waters is saying. He essentially has two issues with Israel's policies. The first is that Israel is engaged in "illegal occupation of Palestinian lands." The second, actually a corollary to the first, is that the building of settlements (read: Jewish settlements) in these lands constitutes an impediment to peace.
Roger, I do hope you will take the time to read this. Re the first point: As you certainly know, Israel contests the notion that the West Bank (Judea and Samaria) are "Palestinian lands." Israel has greater rights to these lands than do the Palestinian Arabs. This is the case for several reasons: 1. The "Palestinians," in the sense of being a singular people, are a very recent creation. Until roughly 40 years ago, the Arabs themselves did not assert independent peoplehood for the Arabs who had lived in the area of the British Mandate. The idea of such peoplehood became popular in the sixties and seventies with the advent of the Palestine Liberation Organization. Yet even if one were to grant that the Palestinians today constitute a people (I, for one, am amenable to this idea), that does not confer retroactive claims on lands, especially on disputed lands. At worst, in Israel's view, the West Bank is disputed territory; it is most certainly not Palestinian territory;

2. Jordan illegally occupied the West Bank in 1948 and continued its occupation until 1967. That occupation conferred no legal status on the West Bank, and its status remained undetermined. The only possible guideline would have been the borders demarcated by the UN in 1947 for a Jewish and an Arab state. But the Arab states rejected partition and proceeded to try and annihilate Israel. While the Jews reluctantly had accepted a very small Jewish state, the Arab rejection and subsequent invasion voided any legitimacy for the 1947 demarcation. Nonetheless, Israel lived within its borders, under perpetual threat, until the Arabs instigated the Six-Day War of June 1967. At that time, the West Bank, along with the Gaza Strip, Sinai, and the Golan Heights, fell under Israeli control. Now here is the key:

ISRAEL IMMEDIATELY PROPOSED NEGOTIATIONS TO ARRANGE FOR PERMANENT BORDERS AND PEACE. The Arabs reacted with the famous "three no's": No peace, no recognition, no negotiation." The United Nations Security Council passed Resolution 242, in which it called for Israel to give up land (not "all" lands, not "the" lands, just land) in exchange for full peace. The text of this resolution, reaffirmed in Resolution 338, is the ONLY statement that carries weight in resolving Arab-Israel issues. In this resolution, the UN recognizes that Israel has the right to control the territories taken in 1967 until there is full peace.

That's right, Roger: The United Nations itself, in the only resolutions it has issued from the Security Council that were agreed to by all parties, endorses Israel's right to control the territories. The final disposition of the territories, as declared at the UN, is to be arranged by negotiations among the Arabs and the Israelis. And so Israel's "occupation" is not illegal, even according to the UN. And 242 implicitly recognizes that Israel has rights in the territories and need not relinquish the entire West Bank even in exchange for full peace. Nonetheless, Israel has consistently extended the olive branch of peace to its neighbors. But the more Israel has given up, the greater the demands and the violence have become. Israel withdrew from Gaza in 2005; there is not a single Jew in the Gaza Strip. And yet, the reward has been persistent rocket attacks.

Israel withdrew from Jericho and then from other areas in the West Bank, giving the Palestinians a chance to begin state-building. The result was two intifadas and untold homicide bombings. That is why Israel built the defensive wall: as a shield, to protect its Jewish and Arab citizens, not in order to purposely separate Arabs!

And so, Roger, there is no "illegal" occupation. As for settlements, Jews have every right to live in their ancestral homeland of Judea and Samaria. Israel does not stop Arabs from living in Israel; why should Jews be prevented from living in the West Bank?

There is even more, Roger. Even if you disagree with everything I have written here, my question would be: WHAT DO YOU WANT ISRAEL TO DO? Do you really believe Israel should just get up and leave every inch of land acquired in 1967? Would that bring peace? Or would that bring even more demands. The answer is the latter. Hamas, of course, would continue to insist that Israel be eradicated. And Fatah is on record that there can be no peace unless Palestinian Arabs are allowed to "return" to their pre-1948 homes in Israel. If that were permitted, then Israel would cease to exist as a Jewish state. Roger, do you believe Israel should cease to exist?

Thanks. Avi

Appeal to Roger Waters' Pro Israeli-Boycott Stance - A Letter to Roger http://rogerwaters.com/forum/index.php?p=/discussion/1452/appeal-to-roger-waters-pro-israeli-boycott-stance-a-letter-to-roger Fri, 03 May 2013 17:47:51 -0500 Abc123 1452@/forum/index.php?p=/discussions Dear Roger Waters,
As is true for many of yours fans (some found right here on your forums), your support for the BDS movement has left a foul taste in my mouth.
I'm not here to try to get you to stop supporting the Palestinians, nor am I here to discuss Israel vs. Palestinians with the other members of this forum, but I am here to implore you to do the right thing.

The Boycott-Israel movement (aka BDS) is a huge obstacle on the road to peace. By demonizing one side, and refusing to even engage with an Israeli point of view (BDS supporters refuse to engage with Israelis on any level), the conflict will never be resolved. In order for there to be peace, both sides must engage in discussion with one another, compromises must be made, and terms must be agreed upon. The BDS movement does the exact opposite of this. It increases belligerence on both sides and makes each side less likely to strive for peace. Moreover, boycotting all Israeli citizens for the policy of their government hardly seems fair considering only 23% of Israelis voted for the current Prime Minister.

Do the right thing. Be an activist for peace, not for just one side. Many Israelis want peace just as badly as you do. Engage in fair discussion. Condemn the anti-peace actions of both sides. Praise the pro-peace moves of both sides, respectively.

Finally, I would encourage you to do more research on the topic, from both points of view. To so strongly champion one side, you should be an expert on the subject. I'm not sure how extensive your knowledge is, but to understand the complexities of the current situation, one should have a working knowledge of Israeli and world Jewry from at least 1880 to the present (especially from 1930s-1967), as well as knowledge of Arabs in Palestine since the fall of the Ottoman Empire, and Palestinians in Jordan, Lebanon, etc.. Additionally, it is important to understand the role of your own country in Israel/Palestine's history (which is a fairly negative one), as well as the role of other major powers (France, US). Lastly, I would suggest learning about the League of Nations' role in the conflict, as well as the founding of Jordan. I guarantee that if you study all of that you won't be so hasty to boycott/condemn either side as it is probably the most complex political issue in the world.

P.S. There has never been peace in modern Israel for any extended period of time. Terrorism and wars have existed in the region since before Israel's creation (and before 1967). Take heed of who started what. If you really want peace, you have your work cut out for you.

P.P.S. Big fan! Saw you with my dad at your Dark Side of the Moon - Toronto concert. Hope you give this a read, if you can.

john lennon's killer to get seventh parole hearing this week http://rogerwaters.com/forum/index.php?p=/discussion/1175/john-lennons-killer-to-get-seventh-parole-hearing-this-week Mon, 20 Aug 2012 07:37:12 -0500 waveproject 1175@/forum/index.php?p=/discussions Beatle John Lennon 32 years ago, will have his seventh parole hearing
this week, New York state's Department of Corrections said on Saturday.

A decision on whether to release him will likely be made public by the
end of the week, said department spokeswoman Linda Foglia.

Chapman's interviews with the parole board will take place at Wende
Correctional Facility, a maximum-security prison in Alden, New York,
where he is being held, she said.

Chapman, 57, is serving a prison sentence of 20 years to life for
shooting Lennon four times in the back outside the musician's New York
City apartment building on December 8, 1980. He pleaded guilty to
second-degree murder.

He has come up for parole every two years since 2000 and has been turned
down each time.

After his last hearing in 2010, the three-member parole board cited in
written comments to Chapman, the "disregard you displayed for the norms
of our society and the sanctity of human life."

Ahead of that hearing, the parole division received dozens of letters
arguing against Chapman's release, including one from Lennon's widow
Yoko Ono, who said she believed Chapman posed a risk to her, Lennon's
two sons, the public and himself.

Chapman was transferred in May to Wende from Attica Correctional
Facility, where he had been held for 31 years.

A corrections spokesman said at the time that Chapman was placed in
protective custody at Wende but the reason was not made public. Wende is
located in western New York state, east of Buffalo.]]>
