The Pros and Cons of David Gilmour and Roger Waters
  • odingreenodingreen September 2011

I would like to say that I liked the fact that David Gilmour played at Roger's London show of The Wall. I'm glad these two guys put aside creative differences years ago when Pink Floyd broke up. There is not just one Pink but two and David Gilmour is as just as much "Mr.Pink Floyd" as Roger Waters is! I've been into Pink Floyd since 1986 when my friend Sean introduced me to their music. I got two 60 minute cassettes that I gave Sean back from him and he put DSOTM and The Final Cut on one and Animals and Meddle on the other. This music got me through High School when all I wanted to do was go back home to Seattle and be a Graphic Designer. My friend Sean was very much someone who looked and acted like David Gilmour and I was very much someone who looked and acted Like Roger Waters. Sean and I are still friends to this day. When Gilmour had to fill Syd Barretts shoes, Pink Floyd really made sure he was not going to just waltz into the group as if it were a cakewalk. Roger really gave Gilmour a hard time and at times Roger was unbearable to work with. By the Final Cut, Richard Wright was not even on the album. We really love these two creative geniuses, Roger and David. I hope they collaberate on more projects in the near future.

how do you know? "Roger was unbearable to work with", how do you know that? where you there? :) (all due....)
  • SkyBlueHopeSkyBlueHope September 2011
    "unbarable" or "unBEARable" (spl?)

dave gilmour filled syd baretts shoes in 1968, and  walks with roger until 1985, both together created spectacular and wonderful musics . . . I think it's not realistic say,  that roger gave gilmour a hard time . . . why gilmour stay nearby roger for 17 years,  when he was so an unBEARable person . . . for make money ? ? may be . . .  I am sure that pink floyd members, had spend in their past, a lot of good and funny moments all together . . . you can observe this on many videos (you tube) from pink floyd's private and communion life  . . . gilmour admits, he also go through a difficult phase, and make use of coke and other things . . . so, like in each life from a normal person, all the fours of pink floyd members, had good and bad moments . . . I THINK, there is no hope for a reunion . . . BUT, roger and gilmour singly will continue and create many, many other beautiful songs . . . and perhaps, sometimes they do a little duett, with mason ? ? and delight so their fans . . .

    yeah :) xxxx

No really! Uncut magazine did a tribute issue to Pink Floyd. I will qoute from the magazine:"It took a long time for me to feel part of the band after Syd left. It was such a strange band..."DAVID GILMOUR.  "By the way, the band, when I joined, never said 'play like Syd Barrett' That was the last thing they wanted!" DAVID GILMOUR. "We always argued. Arguments came out of passion." ROGER WATERS "Roger was never known for his reasonableness...He's one of the world's most difficult men." NICK MASON.

I believe I know what I am talking about.(and yes you have corrected me on the spelling of "unbarable" but Roger was very "unbearable" at times! He strong armed the band like a BEAR!)

I don't know how old you people are but I've been following this band for over twenty years.

I see over and over again that David Gilmour replaced Syd, but that isnt quite the truth. David was brought on to help support Floyd because Syd's behavior was becoming more and more unpridictable (ie missing gigs, playing the same note over and over etc.) and this was damaging the band personally and professionally. Keep in mind that they were not some Simon Cowell creation, but friends who originally formed around Syd. It was Syd's band and for that matter...Syd's sound. Dave came in and because he was the new kid on the block, effectively it shifted to Roger who understood the direction and sound that Syd had cultivated...as Syd faded out doing some solo projects, Dave's influence along with Roger's lyrics then became the sound that most Pink Floyd Fans recognise as their distinguished progressive sound.

Syd's participation with the rest of the band came to a natural death even though several of the band members (namely David and Roger) helped produce some of Syd's solo projects. Anyway, I see no benefit in engaging in this "he said, she said" discussion...all of these men with no exceptions, have ALL helped shape the sound that each and every one of us has all come to love. Most people know at least one Pink Floyd song and many more know the words. I know when I hear several of their songs, I can still be driven to play my air guitar or beat on my invisible drums. So dont point the finger at who caused this row or who was 'The Brains' behind Floyd, they all were the driving force behind getting to where they are....And to give the band their credit...how hard must it be working with the same 3 people for as many years as they all did? I think they are all brilliant...and the genius was equally as collective!

    From a boy in London,
    Bionik

One of the reasons I love pink floyd is because they're also like my friends. I have a friend that is exactly like Rick, one that's exactly like Syd, one that's like a really dark version of Nick, but my absolute best friend is like David Gilmour.

The irony is that I'm exactly like Roger. And I am the first to admit I'm not exactly "cooperative" or "easy to work with" (in fact, if I say that I'm not stubborn at all to my friends, it's pretty much guaranteed to make them laugh) And at school, me and my best friend work on projects a lot together. It usually ends up with us shouting. BUT, when it doesn't, it turns out nicely. And the more I work with her, the more I know what not to do so we don't start shouting cuss words at each other.

The point of this message is that THEY NEED TO GET BACK TOGETHER. I know it won't be the same without Rick. Usually my friend that is like Rick has to calm me and my other friend down, but while there is not another Richard Wright, there are people like him

So, Roger, David, and Nick you guys need to find a piano player (preferably one that is calm and cooperative-like me! ha) and START RECORDING!

    Sincerely,

    A fellow Pink Floyd dan

  • DascherTheDogDascherTheDog October 2011

Oh crap that's supposed to be fan, not dan.

So, yeah. Just cross out the last part.

  • SkyBlueHopeSkyBlueHope October 2011
And u had it all perfect, except for the "dan" lol, maybe u r like Roger? Me too, only female xxxxx
  • Martyrnomore October 2011
I'd love for them to get back together, but I don't think they need to.  They are older men who probably would love to spend the remainder of their years enjoying it, and not fighting with each other.
  • SkyBlueHopeSkyBlueHope October 2011
yeah, they don't need to.....it's all the fans keeping that feud going xxxx it's true, people even posting on here, about how great the seats are that they got, etc, etc, will LIKE Gilmours facebook, and/or Pink Floyd's, but stubbornly refuse to like Rogers? This is so dumb...you should be liking them all, or none at all xxx
  • Martyrnomore October 2011
I see that and I don't understand it either.  A Pink Floyd forum I visit is like that.  I listen to Roger's solo stuff more than David's but honestly Division Bell is one of my favorite albums of all time.
  • butterflybutterfly October 2011
    . . .  who  like  pink floyd , M U S T   like  each  of  them  . . . ROGER  is my favorite only speak  about  his  lyrics . . dave  makes  me  dream  with  his  guitar  playing  . . I also  like  his  " division  bell " , and  " on  the  island "  too  . .  nick  has  also  made  a solo  album , but I don ' t know  anything  about  it  . .  and  rick ' s  " broken  china "  is not  bad  , I like  the  part  with  sinnead  o ' connor  . .  finished ,  I  forget  someone  . .  NO . .  OK  . . guys , let ' go  sleeping  . . . . .
  • SkyBlueHopeSkyBlueHope October 2011
I have clear favorite too xxx :)))) nothing wrong with that, but you don't have to permanently hate the other members (like some rw "purists")

My first memories of Pink Floyd, that huge (at least it seemed huge at my age) red album insert from Dark Side of the Moon. I was 10 and my brother was 15, he bought the album and put that poster on the wall in his bedroom. His bedroom faced the street we lived on and he always had is curtains open for the world to see it when they drove by, man did this drive our parents crazy.

Holy Crap 38 years ago. He introduced me to a lot of great music, but 6 years later my brother died and I have no idea what happened to that poster, wish I still had it though.

I still listen to Floyd, Gilmour and Waters all the time and play them to my 7 year old son a lot and put many of the Floyd greats on his first Ipod so he can appreciate them the way I always have.

What I am trying to say is; remember what their music has given you and don't worry about all this other BS. In the scheme of it all, it is just the music that matters.

  • butterflybutterfly October 2011
. .  HI , RPF . . must  be  wonderful  and  exciting  to  find  a  copy  of  this  poster . . I  also  hear  for  PF over  37  years , but can' t  remember  this  poster . . what  kind  of  design  was  on  it  . .  you  can  just  open  a  topic  in  this  forum  . . Thanks for the suggestion Butterfly, I'll give it a shot.

This was the one with the band members, in concert, in different photos and the words Pink Floyd jumbled across the different photos.
